NorCal in da house!

Finally! On Friday July 12 Kiel and I hooked up to chase the salmon, about 50 miles North of San Francisco. My 2 close friends Mike and Jimmy and my dad, George, also came with Mike's boat, a 2001 Sea Pro. Mike has taken the boat out 5 times in the past 2 weeks and scored limits every single time (I went out with him once too).

Launched at 6 am, had a 30 minute ride and met up with the boat. They had been already trolling for about 30 minutes when we got there. Bite was pretty slow early in the morning. I got the first bite but unfortunately it was a shaker, under the size limit (24 inches for our area) so back in the water it went swimming away happily... Then the boat brought one in and it was downhill for them since, by noon they had salmon limits, 6 nice fish for the three of them. They packed up and went North 10 more miles to our favorite rock cod / ling cod hole. Fished there for another 2 hours, catching about 10 rock cod and one 40 inch ling!

For the jetski crew things started off a lot slower. Kiel got tired of trolling and decided to mooch. He started to eat lunch and sure enough, got a bite. After a good fight he brought it in and he decided to mooch for the rest of the day instead of trolling. After the shaker, I did not get a bite until about 2:30pm when the tip of my rod started bouncing like crazy. Grabbed the rod and started to reel it in, however this one was determined to get away so it started to take out my line which I let him, my drag was really loose. When it got tired it started to come in, only to go nuts again when it saw the net. For those who don't know, salmon will slam its head left and right violently when they see the boat or net, much like a pitbull yanking on a rag toy trying to get it out of your hand. We also have to use barbless hooks, so many times these awesome fish will get away. Not this one!! I stayed with it patiently, while it got away from within my net range like 3 times. Finally, on the fourth approach he got tired and gave me a chance to net him, a beautiful fish about 32 inches. Literally 2 minutes later, Kiel gets on the radio announcing he got another one. Nice! We decided to call it a day and head back to the ramp. Overall, a great day which even a flat tire on my trailer couldn't eclipse. Final count: boat got 6, Kiel 2 and I got one. Not counting the rockfish and ling cod.

Below are some pictures and I'm sure Kiel will chime in and describe how he caught his, since we were fishing about 1-2 miles apart. Enjoy!

Forgot to mention a little mishap: my 4" apex lure got sucked into the jet intake and gave me a scare. I had to jump in the water to see if anything got caught in the impeller while Kiel was keeping an eye out for sharks, LOL... Fortunately the lure got ground up by the impeller and no harm was done. I also had it checked out by the dealer.
