Lowrance 5 DSI installed with Cooler Rack

Postby hop » Wed Jan 16, 2013 4:14 pm

Picked up the ski today. The guys at Coastline Marines in Seabrook, TX did a great job at installing the fish finder. Plus, I didn't have to give up the cup holder!!!! I optioned for above hull wiring. Rack not strapped down yet, but pretty straight forward. Excuse the messy garage. :-( The 75 qtr cooler will hold plenty of fishes and fits nicely.

Well done!

I've just bought a RAM kit for mine.

I was going to use the cup holder to mount mine. Yours is attached directly to the black plastic cover. I have a 2012 FX, and have that plastic cover too but it seems fairly flimsy for attaching a fishfinder. Did they have to do any reinforcements underneath?

It's not flimsy on 2010 FX HO model. Very solid. Tried flexing the ram mount. Inflexible.

Great, thanks...

Perhaps "flimsy" was a poor choice of words on my part. I guess it flexes just a bit when you push on it, does yours do that?

I've used the ram mounts on a humminbird 798. Although it is solid on land, it actually vibrates to a point where I can't tell the GPS location while I'm riding. Also, I had to put some rubber sheets around the ball because the unit slips under chops. The only down side is that because the humminbird mount bracket was designed to have the wires come out from the bottom, using the ram mount basically forces me to run it underneath the unit.. Pitching the wires. Unit still works, just have to make sure that the unit "clicks" and is locked in.

Great pictures! Now fill up that rack with fish!

NO it doesn't flex at all. I will ask about re-enforcement tomorrow. Thanks HawaiianShorts!

Darn! I just ordered 2 RAM mounts, one for my Colorado 400 and the other for my iphone. I did get the shortest arm they offer, I guess it's like 1 1/2", hopefully that will not vibrate as much as the medium sized arm that usually comes with the mounts.

Did you have the medium or the short arm? Also, can you elaborate a bit on adding the rubber sheets around the ball? Was it the top or bottom ball or both ? Was the ball coming loose even from that tight grip?

I got the medium arm. Had to put rubber sheets, from the plumbing section at Home Depot, and placed it on the top and bottom ball. I noticed that when it gets choppy or a bit rough, the mount starts to come loose even with the tightest grip. It just might be because the unit was a bit too heavy.
